The systems shown here represent some of the earliest purpose-built automated cannabis trimming machines developed for commercial use, forming the foundation of modern mechanical trimming technology.
Shearline was founded on a simple idea: cannabis processing should be treated as an engineering challenge, not just a labor problem. In the early days of the industry, nearly all post-harvest work was done by hand, and every grower had a different method for trimming, bucking, drying, and curing. Managing large trimming crews was difficult, labor was unreliable, quality was inconsistent, and product losses were common, yet most people believed there was no alternative. Shearline set out to prove there was a better way.
The First Prototype
The very first Shearline trimmer (built under the original Centurion name) was a complex trimmer containing more than 550 individual parts, almost all hand-machined and custom-built on site. The bed bars, knives, and key structural components were designed from the ground up for cannabis—not adapted from another industry. Those early machines took years of development and refinement, and many units sold in the late 1990s and early 2000s are still in service today with minimal replacement of parts. This was industrial equipment, not a repurposed golf course reel mower adapted for trimming.

Setting the Record Straight
Some industry accounts have characterized the original 1997 Centurion trimmer as a “clunky wet trimmer that tore up buds.” That description is inaccurate. These early machines were hand-built, precision devices designed to trim de-stalked flowers cleanly while preserving quality—more than 25 years ago. Equipment does not remain in service for decades, or retain its original customers, if it damages product. In later years, other manufacturers entered the market using very different approaches, often adapting inverted lawnmower-style assemblies mounted below rotating drums. While cheaper to build, these designs were more difficult to clean and maintain, and they were largely responsible for the industry’s belief that mechanical trimming necessarily damages flowers. Shearline’s original machines pre-dated those methods and established the early engineering standard. Claims that others “revolutionized” the industry frequently overlook this original engineering foundation.
From Centurion to Shearline
Shearline’s history began under the name Centurion. The first production units were complex (550+ components, nearly 300 pounds) and worked beautifully, but over time it became clear they were more complicated than necessary.
Following elegant engineering principles—remove what isn’t needed—the design evolved dramatically. While Ryan Hall’s machines were still being sold under the Centurion Pro name, the core trimmer was simplified from more than 550 parts to fewer than 60. That simpler architecture became the foundation of what is now the Shearline Original. Supporting systems including feeders and dust collection developed alongside it, but the heart of the machine became simpler and stronger.
After more than 14 years of prior use of the Centurion and Centurion Pro names, a separate company later obtained a U.S. trademark registration for the Centurion Pro name. Rather than spend years and substantial resources contesting that registration amid serious personal risks, the decision was made to continue under the Shearline name. The engineering, machines, and product lineage did not change—only the brand name used going forward.

Building a Complete System
Real-world use revealed trimming was just one workflow piece. Upstream (bucking) and downstream (sorting, handling) steps impacted quality. Shearline engineered purpose-built solutions: buckers for clean de-stalking, gentle sorters by size/quality, continuous-feed systems—all created for actual production needs, not trends. Many designs were later widely copied-a common theme in Shearline’s history.
