Safety and PPE

SHEARLINE®
SAFETY INFORMATION & OPERATOR RESPONSIBILITY

IMPORTANT:
Read and understand this Safety Information before operating, cleaning, or servicing any Shearline equipment. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious injury or equipment damage.

Shearline equipment is designed for commercial processing environments and must be operated only by trained personnel.

  1. Intended Use

Shearline trimmers and related equipment are intended solely for the processing of agricultural plant material as specified by Shearline.

Any use outside of intended operation, modification of equipment, or operation contrary to Shearline instructions is considered misuse and may result in injury, equipment damage, and loss of warranty coverage.

  1. Operator & Owner Responsibility

The owner and operator are responsible for ensuring that:

All operators are trained prior to use

This Safety Information and all applicable manuals are reviewed

Required personal protective equipment (PPE) is worn

Power is disconnected and locked out before servicing

Guards, covers, and safety devices are installed during operation

The equipment is operated and maintained according to Shearline instructions

Do not lend, rent, or allow operation of Shearline equipment without providing proper instruction and access to current safety documentation.

  1. Required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
    Mandatory PPE

The following PPE must be worn during operation and routine cleaning:

Eye protection (safety glasses or face shield)

Hearing protection

Additional PPE — Required During Pressure Washing or Deep Cleaning

When pressure washing or performing deep cleaning, the following PPE is required:

Face mask or splash shield

Heavy gloves

Full-body rain gear or equivalent waterproof protective clothing

4. Noise & Airborne Particulate Control

Shearline systems are designed to reduce two important processing-room exposures: mechanical noise and airborne plant particulate.

Mechanical Noise

The Shearline cutting reel does not contact the stationary M2 blade. The cutting surfaces operate with a controlled clearance of approximately 0.002–0.004 in, eliminating continuous metal-to-metal cutting contact as a noise source.

The matched Oneida Air Systems V-System 3000 collector is rated by Oneida at 74 dBA at 10 ft in its standard 3 HP configuration with the supplied sound-control components.

This is a manufacturer-published rating for the Oneida collector subsystem. It is not a measurement of the complete Shearline processing room or an operator’s 8-hour occupational noise exposure. Room acoustics, additional equipment, ductwork, distance and operating conditions can affect actual worker exposure.

Airborne Particulate Control

The Shearline collection system uses cyclonic separation to remove bulk trim from the airstream before final filtration.

Oneida publishes the following specifications for the standard V-System 3000 collector used with Shearline:

  • 1,349 actual CFM at 2.3 in. water column
  • 2,940 CFM free-fan rating
  • Oneida-rated >99% cyclone separation of fine wood dust
  • E12 minimum-efficiency HEPA-grade ePTFE final-filter media
  • 95 sq ft of final-filter surface area

These figures are published by Oneida Air Systems for the collector/filter subsystem. Performance with cannabis particulate depends on the complete installation, capture points, ducting, filter condition, maintenance and operating environment.

Facilities should evaluate actual room conditions after installation and follow applicable occupational-safety requirements for noise, airborne particulate, cleaning and filter service.

5. Electrical Safety & Lockout / Tagout
⚠️ WARNING — ELECTRICAL AND MECHANICAL HAZARD

Disconnect all power and apply lockout/tagout before performing any of the following:

Blade or bedbar removal

Blade adjustment or service

Internal cleaning

Any maintenance requiring access inside the machine

Do not rely on switches or emergency stop buttons alone.

Proper lockout/tagout for Shearline equipment includes:

Turning the machine OFF

Unplugging the power cord from the receptacle

Securing the unplugged plug to prevent reconnection

Attaching a visible “Do Not Energize” tag

Verifying the machine cannot start

Failure to properly lock out power may result in serious injury.

6. Sharp Blade & Pinch Point Hazards
⚠️ WARNING — SHARP COMPONENTS

Blades and bedbars are extremely sharp.

Handle blades with care

Keep hands clear of pinch points during adjustment and installation

Use controlled, deliberate movements when removing or installing components

Blade retention magnets may cause sudden movement during installation. Maintain firm control at all times.

7. Pressure Washing & Cleaning Guidelines
Approved Cleaning Method

Hot water pressure washing is permitted only within the following limits:

Maximum water temperature: 180°F (82°C)

Maximum pressure: 2,500 PSI

Restricted Areas

Do NOT spray water directly:

On top of the motor

Into motor vents or electrical components

At close range to the brush assembly

Maintain adequate distance and use appropriate spray angles to avoid forcing water into seals, bearings, or electrical components.

Washdown-critical bearing design: Shearline uses stainless solid-lubricated bearings on the cutting-reel supports and cleaning-brush shaft. The food-grade solid lubricant is rated to 350°F, well above the machine’s 180°F maximum cleaning-water temperature. This design supports repeated washdown service without routine relubrication.

Operator Protection

Full PPE (see Section 3) is required during pressure washing.

8. Cleaning & Performance Maintenance

For optimal trim quality and machine performance, clean the trimmer after production while residue is still fresh.

During extended production, inspect the cutting area and clean as needed if resin buildup begins to affect performance. A fixed two-hour cleaning interval is not required under normal operating conditions.

Normal cleaning with hot-water pressure washing is typically completed in about 10 minutes when the machine is cleaned promptly after use.

9. Guards, Covers & Safe Operation

Never operate the machine without all guards and covers installed

Do not bypass or defeat safety features

Ensure all fasteners are secure before operation

Operating without covers or guards may result in serious injury and equipment damage.

  1. Training & Supervision

Shearline equipment must be operated only by personnel who:

Have reviewed this Safety Information

Have read the applicable Shearline manuals

Have received proper instruction before use

Untrained or unsupervised operation is prohibited.

Modifications & Unauthorized Use

Do not modify Shearline equipment or accessories without written approval from Shearline.

Unauthorized modifications may:

Compromise safety

Damage equipment

Void warranties

Transfer all risk to the owner or operator

10. Safety Labels & Documentation

Do not remove, obscure, or alter safety labels

Replace damaged or missing labels immediately

Refer to applicable Shearline manuals for model-specific procedures

IMPORTANT REMINDERS

Always disconnect and lock out power before servicing.
Always wear required PPE.
Never operate the machine without guards and covers in place.
